Wings of Freedom
Wings of Freedom is a sober living community helping people coming out of drug addiction, alcoholism, prison, domestic violence, and homelessness.
Since 2001 Wings of Freedom has shown people a new way of life. Founder and Director Dixie Pebworth says people have the opportunity to put their lives back together in a sober environment. Pebworth says, “What we try and do is create what some people would call a normal lifestyle where people get used to going to work, getting up everyday, paying their rent, paying their bills, being responsible.” He refers to the adage, ‘Give a man a fish; feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish; feed him for a lifetime’ saying Wings of Freedom teaches people how to fish, so they can provide for themselves rebuild their lives. The Wings of Freedom program has helped many people over the years, currently there are about 150 people in the program. Wings of Freedom has around 100 apartments in 4 apartment complexes that they supervise and oversee.
Pebworth, Pastor of God’s Shining Light Church in Tulsa, invites people to his church. Services are held on Sunday mornings at 9am and 11am, Wednesday night Celebrate Recovery from 7pm to 9pm, and Friday night support group from 7pm to 9pm. God’s Shining Light Church was started in 2003 and averages about 400 people every Sunday, many of which came through the Wings of Freedom program.
Wings of Freedom accepts donations of money, food, and furniture to help people restore their lives. Pebworth says, “We help people who have nothing in their life. They come in with two sacks and what we want them to do is move out with a U-Haul truck.”
