A Third Place Community Foundation
A Third Place Community Foundation is a community renewal non-profit organization that serves the 74126 and 74130 zip codes in North Tulsa.
A Third Place has a community center that has a food pantry with a nutrition advisers, a library, a legal clinic, computer center, a clothing room, and a meeting room. The community center is located at 5920 North Owasso Ave., West of Peoria. A Third Place also has a community garden, kitchen, park and orchard. This area was formerly a block of abandoned homes. In the community garden and orchard A Third Place grows food for their food pantry and others in the community grow food there for themselves. They have many ongoing community partnerships and projects. The zip codes that A Third Place serves have the lowest life expediencies in the Tulsa area. Rev. Ron Robinson, volunteer Executive Director of A Third Place says, "We have a 14 year life expectancy difference between us and an area just six miles South of midtown Tulsa which has the highest life expectancy." Robinson says that this fact drives much of what they do. They started in 2007 and obtained a 501(c)3 non-profit status in 2009. Robinson's organization works to connect people with projects to renew education, health, and infrastructure. Currently they are seeking partners to buy the closed Cherokee school building to re-purpose it into a food hub and a community resource center. A Third Place is also involved in disaster response and service learning with OU Tulsa, graduate social work classes with the health department.
On Sunday December 9th is their Community Christmas Meal and Party. It is a free event for people in their service area from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. Volunteers are need for this event. Robinson mentioned that they can use musicians, story tellers, and meal servers. Also people can get involved in the Christmas Meal and Party by giving funds for the event. A Third Place is a volunteer group that relies on the generosity of those in the Tulsa area. For those interested in volunteering, call Rev. Ron Robinson at 918-691-3223 or visit their website for information on volunteering at the Christmas Meal and Party on December 9th or at their food pantry every Wednesday from Noon to 4:00 PM. A Third Place's website is turleyok.blogspot.com.
A Third Place plans to start a Senior Citizen Center and meal program as well as working on the closed school across from their community center. To get involved in these projects contact Rev. Robinson who will be having a strategy planning meeting. As a food pantry A Third Place distributes 11,000 pounds of food each month. Donations of money or food are welcome and encouraged. With the connect with the Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma, a one dollar donation goes about five time farther than a food donation. A Third Place is also accepting donations of old computers for their computer center.
