New Hope Oklahoma
New Hope Oklahoma is a charitable non-profit organization that focuses on ending generational incarceration through a variety of prevention services to children of prisoners.
New Hope Summer Camps for kids age 5 to 18 are located at various places in Oklahoma. Fry-Geier explains that many of the kids that attend their summer camps haven’t been outside of Tulsa don’t have many opportunities to to play and participate in activities that are offered like swimming, boating, archery, and arts & crafts. The stigma of having a parent is prison is reduced when they are around others who have a parent in prison and councilors who’ve had similar experiences. Self-determination and self-respect will be emphasized at camp this year. Last year’s emphasis of self-esteem brought measurable positive results. At camp life skills are taught as well as opportunities to increase their social and emotional development with group activities, sports, and chores. Fry-Geier says, “While people get to send their children to camp what we ask is maybe they can consider sending a child with a parent in prison who might not otherwise have that opportunity.” The cost per child for camp is $200. Also, volunteers are needed for New Hope’s Summer Camp. Lindsay Fry-Geier can be contacted to volunteer for camp, after school program, and other events. She can be contacted directly at 918-508-5932 or www.newhopeoklahoma.org.
Individuals can volunteer a few hours a week or a few hours a year. For those interested in making a weekly commitment, volunteers are needed in their after school program. New Hope’s after school program is held at Trinity Episcopal Church in downtown Tulsa as well as various grade schools. The after school programs are from one hour to an hour and a half, typically starting around 3:00. “We’re always looking for caring adults to come and co-lead to help with the different activities that we’re doing in those groups,” Fry-Geier says. She says those who can’t make a weekly commitment are welcome to help with various holiday parties. There are also opportunities for volunteer office workers and a great need for help with summer camp. Camp volunteers serve as counselors, drivers, and meal providers. New Hope also seeks those with a special skill that they can teach to the kids at camp. Students needing practicum hours in social work or nursing are welcome. There are many opportunities to volunteer throughout the summer in their various camps. Financial donations can be sent to the address on their website or given directly through their website.
