Huffy and Friends The Tulsa Firefighter's Educational Clowns
Huffy and Friends The Tulsa Firefighters Educational Clowns is a non-profit community service organization. It is 100% volunteer run and funded completely by donations and sponsors. The focus of the organization is on preventing injuries and deaths through safety education. Fire and burn safety education is presented as well as water safety and all the major human behaviors that kill and injure children. President Tom Hufford AKA Huffy the Clown explains that the group was started by Tulsa firefighters on their time off in a response to children that they saw in preventable medical emergencies. He said the emptiness in their hearts as firefighters witnessing child tragedies is filled by conducting safety education to prevent injuries. For 27 years Huffy and Friends have presented safety shows with magic tricks, skits, songs, and audience participation. The organization networks with all the major children's safety organizations.
On Saturday June 1st The Tulsa Firefighters Educational Clowns will be at Wendy’s at 71st and Garnett for Water Safety Day. From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Huffy and Friends will be giving away free junior frosties, coloring books, candy, and water safety frisbees to all the children who come by. They will be giving away over 100 lifejackets on a first come first serve basis. Hufford says there has to be a parent with the child and the lifejacket has to fit that child. There will be clowns, fire trucks, highway patrol, marine enforcement, US Army Corp of Engineers park rangers, the water safety dog, as well as facepainting and balloon twisting.
On July 20th will be Change For Huffy & Friends, a fundraiser for The Tulsa Firefighters Educational Clowns. “We’re trying to raise funds to keep going. This is our 29th year, 2014 in October we’re going to celebrate our 30 year anniversary,” Hufford says. The Change For Huffy & Friends event will be at Wendy’s at 81st and Memorial. Free junior frosties and free food coupons will be given away as well as coloring books, stickers, and suckers. Fire trucks will also be present.
