Poteau River bridge named for fallen soldier
POCOLA, Okla. (AP) - A bridge over the Poteau River on Oklahoma Highway 9 has been dedicated in honor of a soldier killed in Afghanistan.
Several dozen people gathered Wednesday for the dedication in honor of Sgt. Vincent L.C. Owens. The newly replaced bridge is located west of Pocola.
Owens was killed March 1, 2010, during his second tour of duty. The 21-year-old newlywed had previously served in Iraq. The defense department says Owens died when enemy forces attacked his transport vehicle.
The Southwest Times Record reports (http://is.gd/hcExMk ) that the Oklahoma Legislature approved legislation last session dedicating the Vincent L.C. Owens Memorial Bridge.
The measure was sponsored by Sen. Mark Allen and state Reps. James Lockhart and John Bennett.
