TULSA (FOX 23) - The Creek County Sheriff’s office says recent wildfires were started by a discarded cigarette.

Sgt. Matt Greco says officials believe the cigarette sparked the fire that spread to burn more than 58,000 acres in Creek County. Greco said the fire could have been an accident. Investigators are interviewing two persons of interest and are trying to find a third person of interest for questioning.  It was initially believed the fire started by someone burning trash.

Investigators say the third person told someone he thinks he started the fire in the area of highways 48 and 33. The names of those people are not being released for fear of retaliation.

Investigators said this could be considered third degree arson since no one involved in starting the fire called 911.
