Public gets look at new Union Collegiate Academy
TULSA (FOX 23) - The doors were open for the public to get a glimpse inside of the new Union Collegiate Academy wing. The 125,000-square-foot building was designed to enhance students’ education but also to help with the transition after high school.
Superintendent Dr. Cathy Burden, Board President Heather McAdams and Tulsa Community College President Dr. Thomas M. McKeon were featured speakers at the formal dedication of the new wing on Sunday.
“I love going to school here,” said Senior at Union High School Morgan Fowler, “It will give me a good sense of what college will be like.”
The new Union Collegiate Academy resembles a college campus rather than a high school.
“The academy makes it an easier transition for students from high school to college,” said Superintendent Cathy Burden. “It offers students a variety of college classes in the protective environment of a high school.”
The three story building has 37 classrooms, a student union, the Catherine E. Burden College and Career Center, a cyber café and a large meeting room that seat up to 300 people.
Students told FOX23 that they are enjoying the new classroom design as well as the how some of the courses are taught."You’re not confined to one room,” said Union High School Junior, Terrance Williams. “In a virtual class you can have your own computer and you can be in your own space so that you don’t have to be in the class.”
Parents told FOX23 that they are in awe of the curriculum and the new wing. “I’m just overwhelmed with how big it is,” said Julie Potter. Potter is a Union alumna and said that she is excited that her youngest daughter will get to experience the new wing.
“We’ve met several teachers already we’ve seen classrooms and how they are prepared the latest technology,” said Potter.
Union voters approved two consecutive bond issues to fund the $29-million dollar facility.
