Senate panel hears from open govt. advocates
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Advocates for more openness in state government in Oklahoma say lawmakers need to do more to ensure their work is not being conducted behind closed doors.
Oklahoma State University journalism professor Joey Senat told lawmakers they should eliminate a legislative exemption to the state's Open Records and Open Meetings act. Senat testified Tuesday during an interim study on legislative transparency before the Senate Rules Committee.
Senat is a longtime advocate for more legislative transparency and a member of the board of FOI Oklahoma, a group dedicated to freedom of information in Oklahoma. He also supported a bill that failed last year that would have lifted that exemption for the Legislature.
The House author Rep. Jason Murphey says he plans to introduce a similar measure again this year.
