Man charged with murder wants trial moved
OKEMAH, Okla. (AP) - An Oklahoma man charged in the deaths of two young girls wants his murder trial in the unrelated death of his girlfriend to be moved out of Okfuskee County.
Twenty-six-year-old Kevin Sweat has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder in the 2011 slaying of his girlfriend, 23-year-old Ashley Taylor. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty in the case.
Sweat's lawyers on Tuesday filed paperwork asking the court to move the trial to another county. Jury selection in the case is set to begin June 10.
Sweat is also accused of fatally shooting 13-year-old Taylor Placker and 11-year-old Skyla Whitaker near Weleetka in 2008. Sweat has pleaded not guilty to two counts of first-degree murder in that case. His preliminary hearing in that case is set for Jan. 28.
