Historical society unveils Leon Russell collection
TULSA, Okla. (AP) - The Oklahoma Historical Society has acquired a large collection of works by legendary musician and native Oklahoman Leon Russell that are intended for display in a planned pop culture museum in Tulsa.
Russell is one of the pioneers of the Tulsa Sound and was in Tulsa Tuesday for a news conference announcing the acquisition.
The historical society is seeking approval for a $42.5 million bond issue this legislative session to build the so-called OKPOP Museum in downtown Tulsa. A proposed $20 million bond issue to fund the museum narrowly passed the Senate before getting derailed in the House last year.
The museum has been planned as a 75,000-square-foot, four story building dedicated to Oklahoma artists and their impact on popular culture.
