TULSA (KFAQ) - Tulsa police shot and killed a man during an incident at a south Tulsa apartment complex..
Police told Tulsa's Channel 8 and KTUL.com they were called to the Coppermill Apartments near 71st & Yale around nine o'clock, Saturday Night, on reports of a disturbance.
Officer Leland Ashley says it all started with a man who reportedly chased his roommate out of one of the units with a knife.
Officers attempted to make contact with the suspect to no avail. Ashley says the suspect came out on the apartment's balcony several times and was also starting small fires inside the apartment.
Shortly before eleven o'clock, the suspect once again came out onto the apartment's balcony, this time brandishing what appeared to officers to be some sort of "long rifle."
Ashley says the suspect then pointed the weapon at one of the officers.
Fearing for his life, the officer fired "multiple shots" at the suspect, hitting him once. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.
A further investigation of the weapon in question revealed that it was not a long rifle, as originally feared, rather a B. B. Gun.
Officer Ashley says "we never go into a situation wanting to take anyone's life but ultimately, we have to think of our own lives and the lives of citizens." He reiterated, the officer "feared for his life" at the time of the incident.
Ashley also added, that police are treating the scene like they would any other homicide investigation. The officer involved is currently being questioned by detectives and is expected to be on administrative leave, pending the outcome of the investigation.
