Human trafficking cases announced
TULSA, Okla. (AP) - Federal officials in Tulsa say eight people have been sentenced to prison terms for their roles in a widespread human trafficking case in Oklahoma.
U.S. Attorney Danny C. Williams says six people were sentenced Monday and Tuesday. Two other people were sentenced last year.
Their sentences come after a woman was smuggled into the U.S. more than eight years ago. She managed to contact authorities, who raided brothels operating in apartments in east Tulsa. Investigators discovered that the operation stretched from Tulsa to Houston, Atlanta and other cities.
The United States is both a major destination and source of trafficking victims. And Oklahoma remains a top stop for traffickers thanks to its high drug use, poverty and the crossroads of three major interstate highways in its capital city.
