The federal government officially charged the first person in connection with leaks related to the Russian election hacking.
A 25-year-old woman (“Reality Leigh Winner“, aka “Reality Winner” aka “Sara Winner“, aka “Sara Winners“) from Georgia who works as an intelligence contractor was charged with removing classified material from a government facility.
Back in early May she printed and improperly removed classified intelligence reporting, which contained classified national defense information from an intelligence community agency, and unlawfully retained it.
She then mailed the documents to online news outlets.
Winner admitted to FBI agents that she stole the documents and provided them to The Intercept. The news site published an article on Monday that appears to be based on the stolen materials. The Top Secret records show that Russian agents attempted to hack into U.S. voting systems prior to the November election.
Winner could spend a minimum of 10 to 20 years in a federal penitentiary; and be considered a domestic terrorist upon release.
