The U.S. launched 59 Tomahawk missiles at Syrian regime airbase in response to chemical attack that killed at least 100 people, and injured 550.
President Trump authorized the attack after he was briefed by Defense Secretary James N. Mattis in Palm Beach, Fla., where the president is hosting Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Trump called out Syrian President Bashar Assad, who "choked out the lives of helpless men, women and children. Even beautiful babies were cruelly murdered in this very barbaric attack. No child of God should ever suffer such horror.”
“Tonight I ordered a targeted military strike on the airfield in Syria from where the chemical attack was launched. It is in this vital national security interest of the United States to prevent and deter the spread and use of deadly chemical weapons.”
The Syrian airfield targeted by United States airstrikes early Friday was “almost completely destroyed."
A human rights group said the missile attack damaged over a dozen hangars, a fuel depot and an air defense base.
At least four Syrian soldiers were killed in the airstrike.
