Suspected Shooter Doesn't Fit the Profile; His Family Is "Dumbfounded" By the Shooting

The man who carried out the deadliest shooting rampage in modern U.S. history was a retired accountant with a taste for high-stakes poker, who had moved to Nevada just a couple of years ago.

Stephen Paddock's younger brother, Eric, said the gunman had shown no signs of volatility. Eric said that he was "dumbfounded" as he searched for an explanation for why his well-off brother would carry out such a brutal attack. He said Paddock appeared to be enjoying retired life, taking cruises and visiting casinos. He said, "There's absolutely no way I can even conceive that my brother would shoot a bunch of people he didn't even know. There's no rationale. There's nothing anywhere that said why he did this."

Authorities said it appeared Paddock killed himself in his hotel room. Police also found two tripods positioned at the hotel windows in what appeared to be a fully-equipped sniper’s nest to take better aim at the crowd below. Investigators have confirmed that they’re looking into the gunman's gambling habits and reviewing recent transfers of thousands of dollars involving the suspect and links to gambling activities.

Authorities had also located a “person of interest” named Marilou Danley, who was believed to be the suspect's girlfriend.  She was located outside the country, and is not believed to be involved in the mass shooting.  ISIS claimed after the attack that Paddock was one of the terror group's "soldiers," but the FBI says no links have been found between the gunman and the terrorist group.

Eric Paddock said he last heard from his brother when he texted him to ask about how their mother was doing after her Florida neighborhood lost electricity for several days following Hurricane Irma last month. He said that his brother was previously married but had no children.
