Stuart Scott ESPY Speech Jimmy V Award

Judicial Retention

  • Print
I was looking at the judge races to see who was appointed by a Democrat Governor and who by a Republican Governor. The reason that's important is that if a judge is not retained, then the Governor gets to replace that judge. Of all the judges listed below, only three have been appointed by Fallin or Keating. They are Mitchell, Bruttener, and Thornbrugh. The rest are Democrat appointed.
There are 12 judges on the ballot on November 6th that we will be voting for or against their retention.
Supreme Court Justices up for retention to a six year term:
District No. 8: Douglas L. Combs--appointed by Henry in 2010
District No 7: James E. Edmondson appointed by Henry in 2003
District No. 3: Noma D. Gurich appointed b Henry in 2011
District No. 4: Judge Yvonne Kauger appointed by Democrat Gov. George Nigh in 1984
Court of Criminal Appeals judges up for retention to six year terms:
District No, 1: Clancy Smith was appointed by Supreme Court Justice Edmondson in 2010
District No. 4:: Arlene Johnson, appointed by Henry in 2005
District No. 5: David B. Lewis appointed by Henry in 2005
Court of Cival Appeals judges up for retention to six year terms:
Bay Mitchell - appointed by Republican Governor Frank Keating
Kenneth Buettner - appointed by Republican Governor Frank Keating
P. Thomas Thornbrugh - appointed by Republican Governor Mary Fallin
Robert D. Bell - appointed by Democrat Governor Brad Henry
William Hetherington - appointed by Democrat Governor Brad Henry
Please forward this to your conservative friends. Instead of everyone simply marking "Yes" to retain these judges, I think it's time to start paying attention to who appointed them. A conservative court system would be a huge improvement to the legislative system in Oklahoma.
